Google Local Services Ads (LSAs) are worth it for eligible local service businesses, including plumbers, electricians, HVAC contractors, and attorneys, because you pay per direct customer inquiry rather than per click. Displayed at the very top of Google search results above standard PPC ads with a Google Verified badge, LSAs generate qualified phone calls at $15 to $85 per lead, with the option to dispute invalid calls.

Unlike traditional search ads that require keyword research, ad copywriting, and landing page development, Local Services Ads connect searchers directly to your phone. For home service contractors and local professionals with strong customer reviews, LSAs often produce the lowest cost per customer acquisition in digital marketing.

How Local Services Ads differ from traditional Google Ads

Local Services Ads operate under a completely different framework than traditional Google Ads search campaigns.

Because LSAs sit above standard search ads, they capture high-urgency mobile users who want to speak with a technician immediately rather than browsing multiple company websites.

The Google Verified badge

Advertisers who pass Google's screening and verification get a Google Verified badge on their Local Services Ads profile. Since October 20, 2025, this single blue badge has replaced the older Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google badges. Google also discontinued the Money Back Guarantee that came with the old Google Guarantee badge; eligible customers could only claim reimbursement for services booked before December 7, 2025.

What the screening involves depends on your industry and location. It typically includes background checks and checks of licenses and insurance where your trade requires them. Google says the badge change does not affect how ads are ranked.

Typical cost per lead across common industries

With LSAs, you set an average weekly budget, and Google charges your account each time a user initiates a call lasting longer than a basic connection threshold or sends a direct booking message.

Locksmith services$15 to $30Emergency lockout calls
Residential cleaning$18 to $35Recurring home cleaning quotes

What determines your ad ranking on Local Services Ads?

Because you cannot bid on specific keywords, Google uses an algorithm based on operational reputation to determine which three businesses appear in the top listing box.

The top five ranking factors for LSAs include:

  • Review score and volume: Businesses with high star ratings and steady incoming customer reviews consistently win the top spots. Learn how to generate steady feedback in our guide on getting more Google reviews.
  • Proximity to the customer: Google favors businesses located close to the searcher's physical location or specified zip code.
  • Call responsiveness: Letting calls ring without answering or frequently sending callers to voicemail downgrades your ad ranking. Answering phone calls live during business hours is mandatory.
  • Bidding settings: You can choose Maximize Leads to let Google set bids dynamically, or set a manual Max Per Lead bid cap.
  • Business hours: Ads only display as active when your profile indicates your office or dispatch team is open to take customer calls.

How to dispute invalid leads and receive refunds

One of the strongest advantages of Local Services Ads is the ability to request a credit for invalid phone calls.

You can successfully dispute leads under specific conditions:

  • The caller dialed the wrong number or was looking for a different business.
  • The inquiry was automated spam, sales solicitation, or a robocall.
  • The caller needed a service your profile explicitly does not offer.
  • The caller's location is entirely outside your selected service territory.
  • The caller was a duplicate inquiry charged twice within a short window.

You cannot dispute a lead simply because the prospect decided your price was too high or chose not to hire you after speaking. Google reviews call audio recordings to verify valid disputes before issuing billing credits.

When Local Services Ads are not the right fit

While LSAs offer high return for established trades, they may not work well under these conditions:

First, businesses with fewer than five reviews or ratings below 4.2 stars struggle to gain ad impressions. Competitors with dozens of five-star reviews will claim the top three visible positions.

Second, if your business relies on an answering service that takes messages rather than scheduling appointments, your conversion rate on expensive inbound calls will drop.

Third, if you operate an ecommerce store, B2B software company, or non-local enterprise, your business model is ineligible for the LSA platform. In those cases, traditional search campaigns remain the right route. Read our Google Ads starter plan for small business to structure standard search campaigns.

Combining Local Services Ads with standard search campaigns

The most effective local marketing strategy combines both ad platforms. By running Local Services Ads alongside traditional Google Search ads, your company can capture two distinct positions at the top of the search results page: the Local Services Ads listing with its Google Verified badge and the top sponsored text ad.

This double presence pushes competitors down the page, builds trust, and captures searchers regardless of whether they prefer to call immediately or read your landing page first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Google Ads and Local Services Ads?

In standard Google Ads, you pay every time someone clicks your ad, regardless of whether they call you. With Local Services Ads, you pay only when a potential customer calls or messages you directly through the ad listing.

How much does a lead cost on Google Local Services Ads?

Lead costs vary by industry and location, generally ranging from $15 to $85 per qualified lead. Locksmith and cleaning leads often cost $15 to $35, while competitive roofing, HVAC, and legal inquiries can range from $50 to $120 each.

What is required to get the Google Verified badge?

You have to pass Google's Local Services screening and verification. Requirements vary by industry and location but typically include background checks and, where your trade requires them, license and insurance checks. The Google Verified badge replaced the Google Guaranteed and Google Screened badges in October 2025.

Can you dispute and get refunded for bad LSA leads?

Yes. Google allows you to dispute calls that are spam, wrong numbers, solicitors, or customers seeking services outside your specified territory. If Google approves the dispute, the lead fee is credited back to your account.
