What is answer engine optimization (AEO)? A guide

Learn what answer engine optimization (AEO) is, how AI search platforms summarize web content, and how to optimize your website for direct AI answers.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is writing and structuring your website content so AI search tools can find it, quote it and link to it when they answer a question. Traditional SEO focuses on ranking your pages in a list of results; AEO focuses on being one of the sources cited inside AI answers on Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and ChatGPT. Most of the work is the same good SEO, with more attention to clear, direct answers.

More searches now end with an AI-written summary at the top of the page, and people ask longer, conversational questions. Pages that answer clearly are easier for these tools to quote than pages padded with filler.

How answer engines generate responses

Most AI search tools use a method called retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). In plain terms, it works in three stages:

  1. Retrieval: The tool runs one or more searches for the question and gathers pages that match. Google says its AI features may run several related searches across subtopics (it calls this "query fan-out").
  2. Extraction: The system pulls the passages from those pages that best answer each part of the question.
  3. Generation: A large language model (LLM) writes an answer from those passages and adds links or citations to the sources.

If your page ranks well but buries the answer under eight hundred words of introduction, a passage from a competitor that states the answer plainly is easier to use.

Traditional SEO vs answer engine optimization

AEO builds on traditional SEO. You cannot be cited in AI answers if crawlers cannot index your site, and Google says there are no extra technical requirements for its AI features beyond those for regular search.

Five ways to make your content easier for answer engines to use

Most of this comes down to how you format information on each page.

1. Use the answer-first content structure

Every informational section on your website should follow an inverted pyramid structure. Open the section by answering the question directly in the first two or three sentences:

  • Define the concept plainly.
  • State specific numbers, price ranges, or timelines if applicable.
  • Avoid throat-clearing phrases like "To understand this topic, we must first look at..."

Then use the following paragraphs for context, exceptions and detail. The opening gives an AI tool a self-contained passage to quote, and human readers still get the depth they need.

2. Format headings as conversational questions

Users interact with AI answer engines using natural language. They speak into voice assistants or type complete sentences into chat boxes.

Align your H2 and H3 headings with these exact queries:

  • Use natural question phrasing: "How much does a commercial roof replacement cost?" rather than "Commercial Roof Replacement Pricing Overview."
  • Keep headings in sentence case without decorative characters.
  • Ensure the heading accurately reflects the immediate paragraph below it.

3. Use tables and numbered steps

Tables and numbered steps are easier to read and quote than long, winding paragraphs, for people and for machines.

Whenever your content compares options, breaks down pricing, or outlines a sequence of events, format the data cleanly:

  • Tables: Use tables with clear column headers for comparisons, feature checklists, and cost ranges.
  • Numbered lists: Use numbered lists for step-by-step instructions. Keep each step focused on a single concrete action.
  • Bullet points: Use plain bullet lists for real sets of items, without a bold label on every line.

Google has long pulled lists and tables from pages into featured snippets, and the same clear structure helps AI tools find the right passage.

4. Add structured data where it fits

Schema markup gives search engines machine-readable facts about your business and pages. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features, and the markup must match what is visible on the page, but it still helps search engines understand who you are and what the page covers.

Useful schema types include:

  • Organization or LocalBusiness: your name, address, service area, hours and contact details.
  • Article: the author, publication date and topic of a guide.
  • FAQPage: question-and-answer pairs that appear on the page. Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative government and health sites, so treat this as context for machines, not a way to get extra space in results.

5. Build your reputation beyond your website

AI tools draw on the wider web, not just your site. Reviews, press mentions, directory listings and articles that name your business all shape what they find when someone asks about your field.

To build that presence:

  • Keep your business description and key facts consistent across your website, profiles and directories.
  • Earn mentions in respected industry publications and local news sites.
  • Ask customers for reviews on Google and the independent sites your industry uses.
  • Consider an llms.txt file only as an optional extra. Google says you don't need one for its AI features; read what llms.txt is before spending time on it.

Common mistakes in answer engine optimization

Avoid these common missteps when adapting your content for AI search engines:

Copying AI-generated summaries onto your blog without original data, examples or firsthand experience adds nothing the models don't already have. Pages with fresh, checkable facts give them a reason to cite you.

Putting key content where crawlers may not see it is another mistake. Some AI crawlers don't run JavaScript, so text that only appears after scripts load can be missed. Keep your main answers in the page's HTML as plain text.

Neglecting traditional technical SEO undoes the rest. If your site is very slow, has broken canonical tags or can't be crawled, it is less likely to be found in the retrieval stage, and the answer formatting never gets seen.

Showing up in both regular results and AI answers takes the same groundwork: a technically sound site, clear content and mentions from other sites.

Our Growth SEO package at $1,499 per month includes a technical audit and fixes, a content plan, 4 optimized articles or pages a month, digital PR and link building, and AI search visibility tracking. Larger sites can step up to Scale SEO at $2,999 per month, which adds more content and unlimited on-page work. See our SEO services for the details.

Immediate next steps for your content

Review the most important service page on your website. Look at the first heading and the paragraph beneath it. If it takes three paragraphs to say what the service is and what it costs, rewrite that section so the answer comes in the first two sentences.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

Traditional SEO aims to rank your page in the list of search results. Answer engine optimization (AEO) aims to make your content a source that AI tools quote and link to when they write an answer. The two overlap heavily, because most AI answers are built from pages that search engines already index.

Which platforms use answer engine optimization?

AEO covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and ChatGPT search. Most of these tools search the web when you ask a question, pull passages from the pages they find and write an answer with links to the sources.

Does AEO replace traditional SEO?

No. AI answer tools find their sources through search, and Google says the usual SEO best practices apply to its AI features with no special optimization required. Crawlable pages, useful content and links from other sites remain the foundation.

How do you structure content for AI answer engines?

Put a short, two to three sentence answer right below each main question heading. Follow it with steps, tables or details where the content calls for them, and keep the important text on the page as real text rather than in images.
