BLAST is a gym workout tracker for people at every level, from first-time lifters to regulars with years of training behind them. Techcelerant designed and built the app for iOS and Android. It includes an exercise planner, custom routines, an exercise directory, quick notes, in-app notifications and a free plan that upgrades to Premium.

The client

BLAST is built for people who train on their own and want structure. Its users want to know what to do next, keep track of what they did, and look up how to perform an exercise. The client's team planned a freemium model: a useful free version with a set number of workouts each week, and a Premium plan for people who train more.

The problem

Most workout trackers either hand people a fixed program or give them a blank log. BLAST's users needed both: ready-made workouts to follow, and the freedom to build and save their own. They also needed exercise guidance inside the app, so they didn't have to switch to video sites between sets. The business needed a fair limit on free use that made the value of Premium obvious.

The app had to:

  • Suggest the next workout and show what it involves.
  • Let users create and save routines.
  • Include a searchable library of exercises.
  • Track workouts and body measurements over time.
  • Support a weekly free limit with an easy upgrade.

What we built

The app has three main tabs: Track, Train and Measure. The Train screen is the center of it:

  • An "Upgrade to Premium" banner at the top that shows how many free workouts are left this week.
  • A "Pending Workouts" section that answers "What's my next challenge?" Each workout card shows the name, such as Full Body #2, the duration, estimated calories, intensity, number of exercises and the equipment needed.
  • A front and back body diagram on each card that highlights the muscles the workout targets.
  • "My Routines," where users create, name and save their own routines.
  • The BLAST Library, an exercise directory with instructions for each movement.
  • An exercise planner for scheduling sessions.
  • Quick notes, so users can jot down weights, form cues or how a set felt.
  • In-app notifications for reminders and new challenges.
  • Share, chat and settings icons in the header.

The Track tab logs completed sessions, and the Measure tab records body measurements.

Design decisions

People use gym apps in bright gyms and dim ones, often mid-set. We chose a dark charcoal theme with white text for high contrast and less glare. The BLAST logo in red and white sits at the top left.

Coral is the action color. It marks the floating "+" button, the active tab and the muscle map. The upgrade banner uses green instead, so it reads as an offer and doesn't get confused with the main actions.

The muscle map was a key choice. A quick look at the red-highlighted muscles tells users what a workout will hit, which helps them plan around sore muscles or rest days.

Workout stats sit in a short column with small icons for time, calories and intensity. They're easy to scan, and they leave room for the body diagram on the right.

Showing the remaining free workouts right in the banner keeps the limit honest. Users always know where they stand and can upgrade from the same spot.

The result

BLAST is available on the App Store and Google Play. Users can pick up a suggested workout, build their own routines, look up exercises in the library, take notes, plan their week, and track sessions and measurements. The client's team has a working freemium model with a clear path from the free plan to Premium.
